Radial shockwave therapy is a useful tool for treating stubborn, chronic tendinopathies in conjunction with other modalities such as hands-on therapy and eccentric loading exercises.

Shockwave Therapy is particularly helpful for plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, patella tendinopathy, hamstring and gluteal/trochanteric tendinopathy, rotator cuff tendinopathy, medial and lateral elbow epicondylopathy (tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow). It is also very useful for locating and treating deep myofascial trigger points that are otherwise not readily palpable by hand or responsive to other myofascial release techniques. Overuse injuries lead to repeated microscopic tendon damage which causes inflammation, scar tissue, adhesions, and calcifications which restrict the movement, strength, and elasticity compared to a healthy tendon. Chronic tendinopathies don’t heal very well on their own.
The goal of shockwave treatment is to deliver a measurable dosage of mechanical energy directly into the affected tendon tissue to create a microscopic injury or acute trauma to the tissue in order to stimulate a fresh healing response within the tissue. This ‘good inflammation’ is not dissimilar to what we aim to generate with eccentric loading exercise (which is another key component of treating tendon injuries). On a bigger picture level, this idea of using targeted and controlled stress or trauma to spark a healing response within our body and mind has parallels with the ice bath, chiropractic adjustments, exercises (including certain breathing exercises), dry needling, and massage.
